Shasta Lake Bear Precautions

Every visitor to the Shasta-Trinity National Forests needs to be aware of the potential for bear encounters. There are some very specific do's and don'ts when visiting bear country and most of them have to do with how WE handle our food.

Here are some things that YOU can do to help solve the problem...

1. Where available, use bear proof garbage bins and food storage lockers. Do not leave food or cooking items unattended on table or in campsite.

2. Store your food in air tight containers, disguised with a tarp or blanket, in your car, bear proof lockers or in your trailer. If feasible, hang all food/ice chests in trees at least 10 feet above the ground and 5 feet away from the tree trunk.

3. Keep your food preparation and eating area will separated from your sleeping area.

4. Remove all garbage from campsites and dispose of it in designated containers. Garbage receptacles are usually emptied nightly in problem areas.

5. DO NOT take any food, drinks or cosmetics into your sleeping area. Change clothes after cooking. DO NOT store soiled clothing in the sleeping area.

6. Respect the rights of bears. DO NOT try to feed or pet bears. DO NOT bait bears in order to photograph them. (California Code of Regulations 251.3 -˛Prohibits feeding of big game mammals.˛ Punishible by a $1,000.00 fine and/or 6 months in jail or both.)

7. Store pet food the same as human food, out of reach from bears and other animals.

When you encounter a bear...

1. Do not get in between the bear and its food source.

2. Vacate the area if necessary.

3. If a bear approaches, try to scare it away by shouting or making noise.

4. If you see unattended food or other potential hazards in a campsite, let the campground host know so they can help keep your camping experience a safe and happy one. Please report all bear problems to the Forest Service.

While enjoying your stay on the Shasta-Trinity National Forests, please follow all necessary precautions and:

DO NOT FEED THE BEARS!
