Fire closes a few Shasta Lake facilities

(Wednesday, August 27, 2008 - 10:05 a.m.) All marinas, resorts and other commercial businesses at Shasta Lake are functioning as normal.

Here's a list of facilities that are closed due to the "Motion Fire" near Shasta Dam.

  • Chappie-Shasta Off-Highway Vehicle Area
  • "Shasta" public campground.

Please call the Shasta Lake Information Center (U.S. Forest Service) at (530) 275-1589 if you have questions about these facilities or want the latest info.

The Martin Mars waterbomber is back at Shasta Lake!

(Sunday, July 13, 2008, 2:52 p.m.) The Martin Mars waterbomber is back at Shasta Lake after fighting a fire down in Big Sur, California. The plane's current base of operations is at Bridge Bay Resort.

When the waterbomber is working a fire it uses water from Shasta Lake. It scoops up water as it skims across the Sacramento arm of the lake.

The U.S. Forest Service, Shasta County Sheriff Boating Safety Unit and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary are in the area to control boat traffic during waterbomber operations. The boating public is being asked to treat the airplane as an emergency vehicle and stay clear as it operates on Shasta Lake. The public is also being asked to be careful and not be distracted by the airplane when driving across the Pit River Bridge on Interstate 5. (Also known as the Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Bridge)

Some weather reports are now including smoke forecasts. For weather info please visit the Weather page at ShastaLake.com

MASK INFO: If you must be outside in a smoky area, healthy individuals may wish to wear a mask called a "particulate respirator." These resemble common dust masks but are substantially more effective at removing the airborne small particles produced from fires. Choose one that has two straps and has NIOSH, and either N95 or P100 printed on it and follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully. For more information on N-95 or P100 go to the California Department of Public Health web page. See link below... How to Choose the Correct Mask to Protect Your Lungs (.PDF)

Many home improvement stores carry N95 masks such as the 3M N95 particulate respirator (model 8210)

AIR FILTERS: I've found that a stand-alone electric HEPA air filter works well inside at night when the evaporative cooler isn't on. When the evaporative cooler is on you can always direct the filter's airstream at your face.
